The Senior Year

The senior year differs from the junior year in that it is the period to concentrate more on GRE preparation and testing, graduate school placement, and graduate admissions and financial aid counseling. All other activities remain the same. Click here to request more information.

  • Mentoring

McNair Scholars benefit from mentoring provided by a faculty member from Truman State University.  An essential element of mentoring is the preparation of a proposal for the Summer Research Internship.

  • Academic Counseling and Advisement

The McNair Staff provides academic counseling and advisement based on the needs of the Scholars.

  • Graduate Record Examination Preparation and Testing

Scholars who feel prepared take the GRE in April or June of their junior year. Others continue to benefit from the GRE Preparation workshops and practice tests.

  • Graduate School Visitations

The graduate school visit provides an opportunity for our Scholars to visit the universities where they will spend 5 to 7 years of their lives. Scholars examine the graduate school of their choice and meet key people involved in the admission process.

  • Graduate Education Preparation Seminars and Workshops

Junior and senior Scholars participate in seminars and workshops to prepare them for graduate study, give them basic information about graduate education, and help them develop plans for their doctoral pursuits. These seminars and workshops are listed under Workshops.

  • Special Activities

These include general McNair meetings, picnics, and other social activities that encourage McNair Scholars to share their experiences, get closer to staff members, and establish a sense of camaraderie.

Summer Program

  • Summer Research Internship (SRI)

The Scholars selected for the SRI are involved in a ten-week program during the ten-week summer session at Truman. A Research Supervisor (Mentor) oversees the work of each Summer Intern. During the ten-week summer session, the 12 Summer Interns participate in research enhancement workshops which assist the Interns in completing their research projects. To participate in the SRI, the Scholar must submit a fundable proposal.

  • Research Presentations

Scholars are provided the opportunity to present their research at various conferences, including the Truman Annual McNair Conference. The Research Coordinator and qualified Faculty members assist the Scholars in preparing the presentations, the art of public speaking, and effective verbal and audio-visually aided presentation.
